Candidate Views
What is your view on health care provision on the Island?
Its good, but it can always do with more resources.
I know this first hand when I had to wait more than two years to be seen by a specialist at Nobles hospital.
Does the Island provide a good education?
The figures speak for themselves with the results posted by the schools over the last few weeks.
Should the Island be independent?
The UK is our major trading partner and I cant see that changing in the next few years.
I think people like the idea of full independence but it can't happen without a full referendum, and that's not going to happen without a full breakdown into the pros and cons.
What are your views on the islands taxation regime and VAT?
We all enjoy living in a low tax area. Its what has made the Island so successful over the years. We have to protect that, but at the same time look at ways to make up for the VAT shortfall. VAT will remain a main source of income for the government.
Is inflation hurting the Isle of Man?
Of course it is! And we have higher rates than the UK.
It does seem that most people acknowledge that most of the big increases are out of our control. The Manx governments recent announcement to peg the price of electricity is an interesting idea and we wait to see if that has an effect on the inflation figures.
Should there be state owned monopolies or free market competition (i.e. Water, Post, Gas, Electricity, Telecom's, Ferry Travel etc..)?
Airport director Anne Reynolds has opened the debate by saying Ronaldways could run at a lower cost in private hands. Nothing should be rules out but checks and balances need to be in place before selling off the family silver.
Should we have an open seas policy like the open sky's policy?
I really don't have a yes or no answer to this. Its unlikely to happen in the next few years due to the user agreement being in place. Could it be renegotiated?
I remember the last time there was competition with Manxline and it almost brought both companies to their knees.
Does the Island do enough to protect its environment?
I know how lucky we are to have the most fantastic countryside on our doorstep. I think the Island does look after its environment well but could always do more, subject to finance.
Where do you see the future of the Islands economy (i.e. Finance, Manufacturing, Service, Tourism, Film, Space etc)?
Diversity is the name of the game. By not having all our eggs in one basket makes it easier to ride out any future financial storms.
Where do you think new jobs can be generated?
In new start up industries that are looking for favourable terms and conditions. Where the government can help them develop.
Should the Chief Minister and MLC's be publicly elected?
Would that make the Chief Minsters position Presidential?
It sounds interesting on paper but at the end of the day the next CM will be picked by the MHK's voted in my the electorate. I believe that will work.
